What I Learned From the #OneADayInMay Challenge 2021

What I Learned From the #OneADayInMay Challenge 2021

This year I participated in a challenge called #oneadayinmay, where each day in May, I committed to sketching, designing, or creating a new potential product. This challenge was started last year (2020) by Cami Monet, as a way for her to get herself in the habit of creating something each day and further develop a product line.

This year, each day in May, I shared what I did in my Instagram Stories and one of them is even up in my shop already! It was a lot of fun (and also a ton of work) and I’m really excited about some of the results that came from it!

I created something each weekday, and skipped weekends and holidays, which gave me a total of 20 new designs!

I thought it would be fun to see all the designs together, so below is a compilation of photos of everything I created in May, in the order that I created them! (One of these designs is a secret project, so you’ll notice there are only 19 photos.)

What I Learned

Getting in the habit of creating every day wasn’t as hard as it seemed! I was really intimidated in the beginning, but what I found helpful was doing a huge brainstorming session before the month started, where I just listed out everything I’ve been wanting to create, different ideas for things, design goals, etc. When the day came, I just looked at my list and picked out what I felt like making that day. I can definitely get into a rut of analysis paralysis, where I just have so many ideas I don’t know where to start (and end up not starting anything), and this method forced me to just pick something and DO IT!

What’s Next

As I went along, I made notes regarding what needs to happen next with each design. Some designs are fully complete, and all I need to do is order product. Others need some finalizing before that happens, and still others are really just a rough sketch that needs to be revised. You should expect to see a sprinkling of new products throughout the next few months as I finalize all the details!

If there’s a design you’re excited about or something you’d like to see me do, I’d love to hear about it! It would also be of great benefit to me if you could take this short, 5-question survey to give me feedback.
